<image:title>dear diary - Jacron: Paper that wears like leather - pretty standard // DEAR DIARY… //(31/03/2025)</image:title>
<image:caption>Turns out, you don’t need leather for a leather patch. Jacron paper does the job just as well—maybe better. It’s the same stuff Levi’s uses, a pressed cellulose fiber that looks like leather, wears like leather, but won’t crack, peel, or freak out when it gets wet. So we’re using it for the tabs on our new jeans—clean, structured, and built to last. But we’re not stopping there. This stuff’s got potential. It’s tough, pliable, and ages like a good pair of jeans. So, naturally, we’re thinking: a Jacron “paper leather” jacket. Lightweight, structured, and built to break in, just like the real thing—only, you know, made from paper. For now, it’s on our jeans. Soon? Maybe a whole damn jacket.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We had some leftover selvedge denim from our new jeans. Could’ve tossed it. Could’ve hoarded it. Instead, we stitched it into something somewhat useful—a denim card holder. Same premium fabric, now pocket-sized. It’s structured, durable, and wears in like your favorite pair of jeans. No nonsense—just raw denim, clean stitching, and two folders to keep your essentials locked in. Good for cards, cash, maybe a fortune cookie note telling you to chase your dreams. In summary — Waste not, want not.</image:caption>

<image:title>dear diary - Our Dear Friend & Artist: Lachlan Hood - A trip to Amsterdam gave us the pleasure of meeting Lachlan Hood. A 23-year-old creative from Melbourne, Australia. So now, we take the pleasure in passing that introduction onto you.</image:title>
<image:caption>Lachlan, or HOODZ (as he goes by) is primarily an artist that operates within the old fashioned, tried and true medium of pen and paper. Where - as a right handed human - he draws using his left hand in an attempt to replicate the drawings one’s parents would proudly hang up high on the fridge. In doing so he creates chaotic - and in some cases disfigured characters that are vibrantly colourful and beautifully nostalgic. “I’ve been drawn to creative outlets for as long as I can remember”, and this is what captured the pretty standard eye. As of right now “my focus is on branding and digital design. I create expressive work whenever I get the chance, often assisted by music from my favourites Mount Kimbie, King Krule & Mac(adelic). It’s a way to unwind, push boundaries, and step out of my own comfort zone. Design has become a huge part of who I am, and I love seeing what other creatives my age are doing, especially the work coming from the king of Pretty Standard.“ How flattering <3 - we honestly didn’t put that in ourselves… We could have - but we didn’t</image:caption>

<image:title>dear diary - Selvedge Denim Consumer Care: - Selvedge denim is renowned for its toughness, yet it comes with one key rule—it shouldn’t go in the washing machine. Originally produced in America during the days of horses and carriages, it quickly became a favourite among miners for its durability, breathability, and some might speculate, its ability to keep them looking dapper. Over time, denim became a staple of the cowboy aesthetic, fuelling the global “Americana” fashion movement. Eventually, Japanese artisans adopted and perfected traditional denim-looming methods, cementing their reputation as the world’s leading producers of selvedge denim today. When it comes to cleaning selvedge denim, there are two main schools of thought: the freezer method—placing your jeans in a plastic bag and leaving them overnight (our preference)—or the warm bath method, which, while effective, is a bit of a pain in the rear (literally). As unconventional as it sounds, selvedge denim shouldn’t be washed for six to eight months at a time—quote us on that. Instead, they should be aired out on a hanger, which, somehow, does the job. If you get a stain, don’t stress. A quick dab with a tissue or paper towel should do the trick, while happy accidents like paint splatters are best left alone. Rips and holes happen too—adding character to your denim. We’re currently learning denim repair, so if disaster strikes in a couple of years, we might be able to help. If it happens sooner, consider it the perfect excuse to get them professionally repaired—an art.</image:title>

Thick, durable, and built tough enough to be constantly dragged in the mud. If you’ve got a big dog and want a Pretty Standard collar, let us know. <image:title>dear diary - Traffic Cameras: Photography paid for by your tax - In an era where content is king and everyone’s looking for the next creative way to capture their image, we’ve found the ultimate free photographer—one that never misses a shot, works 24/7, and is already funded by our taxes: traffic cameras.</image:title>
<image:caption>These silent observers, scattered across highways and intersections, weren’t designed to be artistic, but they document us better than most hired professionals. They capture motion, blur, grit, and raw authenticity—no posing, no retakes, just life as it happens. And while these photos come at no upfront cost, they aren’t exactly cheap. With nearly 30% of our income feeding into public services like this, we’re all unknowingly financing a photography service we rarely use—until now. For our "Work Where" collection teaser, we turned the lens back on itself, using traffic cameras to document us in our ute, caught in transit, in motion, in the middle of the work. It’s a reminder that the best shots aren’t always planned—and that sometimes, the system you pay for might as well work for you.</image:caption>

<image:title>dear diary - Fatigue Pants: An Origin Story - pretty standard // DEAR DIARY… // (date)</image:title>
<image:caption>When you think of classic, rugged style, a few iconic garments come to mind—leather jackets, denim jeans, and, of course, fatigue pants. These military-inspired trousers have a history as tough as the fabric they’re made from, evolving from the battlefields to a staple in casual fashion. First introduced during World War II as part of the U.S. Army’s standard-issue uniform, fatigue pants were designed for durability and mobility. Made from herringbone twill (HBT), they were lightweight yet sturdy—ideal for soldiers performing both combat and non-combat duties, like cleaning and labour. After the war, veterans brought fatigue pants into civilian life, where they became popular among workers for their comfort and resilience. Their status grew during the Vietnam War with the introduction of jungle fatigues, made from ripstop cotton for breathability and durability in harsh conditions. By the 1960s and 70s, fatigue pants had become a symbol of rebellion, worn by counterculture icons, artists, and protesters. As fashion evolved, the 1980s and 90s saw designers refining fatigue pants with slimmer fits, varied colours, and high-fashion interpretations, transforming them into a versatile wardrobe essential. Today, fatigue pants remain a go-to for their timeless appeal, effortlessly pairing with tees, denim jackets, and even blazers. While their military roots are still evident, they now stand as a symbol of individual style and comfort. They’ve been worn by soldiers, workers, rebels, and fashion enthusiasts alike, proving that the most practical garments often become the most iconic. So, the next time you slip into a pair, remember—you’re wearing a piece of history.</image:caption>

<image:title>dear diary - Raw Denim: An Origin Story - pretty standard // DEAR DIARY… // (date)</image:title>
<image:caption>Raw denim is denim in its purest form—straight off the loom, untouched by modern finishing processes or harsh chemicals. It’s rugged, unprocessed, and packed with unadulterated charm. To understand its roots, rewind to 19th-century America, where miners, cowboys, and railroad workers needed tough, no-nonsense clothing that could withstand gruelling labour. Raw denim answered the call with its durability and no-frills attitude. But it’s not just about looks—raw denim has substance too. With its high-quality construction, it resists the disposable nature of fast fashion, offering a sustainable alternative for eco-conscious consumers. Crafted through time-honoured techniques, its journey from loom to closet is a labour of love, involving careful spinning, weaving, and indigo dyeing, all steeped in craftsmanship. And here’s the best part—raw denim gets better with age. As you wear it, wash it (or don’t—we won’t judge), and live your life in it, the fabric moulds to your body, developing fades and creases unique to your experiences. From the mines of yesteryear to today’s urban streets, raw denim carries a legacy of authenticity. In a world of mass-produced, cookie-cutter fashion, it stands as a beacon of individuality and craftsmanship—proof that sometimes, the best things in life are left raw.</image:caption>

<image:title>dear diary - Pretty Standard: From the start - pretty standard // DEAR DIARY… // (date)</image:title>
<image:caption>Pretty Standard started as a spray-painted logo on a school hallway wall—just an idea tossed around between mates. For years, it was nothing more than a conversation. Then in 2020, with a half-demolished house as our workspace, we decided to give screen printing a shot. The first pieces were a handful of T-shirts and a hand-sewn hoodie, followed by a pair of shorts that ended up doing surprisingly well. That small success pushed us to keep going. Coming from a finance background, fashion and fabric were completely new to me, but we kept learning, experimenting, and refining what we made. What started as a bit of fun quickly became something real, and we’ve been building on it ever since.</image:caption>
